Overview

Windows Live Mesh is a file synchronization and remote desktop tool developed by Microsoft, designed to help users keep files and folders in sync across multiple PCs and Macs. As part of the Windows Live suite, it enables automatic updates of selected folders, offering 5GB of cloud storage via SkyDrive (now OneDrive) for easy access and backup. The platform also features remote desktop functionality, allowing users to access their desktops from anywhere with an internet connection.

Cross-Platform Synchronization

Windows Live Mesh stands out with its ability to synchronize files and folders between Windows PCs and Macs. Users can select which directories to sync, ensuring important files are always up to date across all devices. This is especially helpful for professionals and students working on multiple computers, as it eliminates the risk of version conflicts.

Cloud Storage with SkyDrive

Included in the service is 5GB of free storage on SkyDrive. Files placed within a synchronized folder are automatically uploaded to the cloud, making them retrievable from the web interface or additional synced devices. This functionality adds an extra layer of security through automatic backups.

Remote Desktop Access

A key feature is the ability to connect remotely to another computer within the network. This allows authorized users to access important programs and files, or troubleshoot issues on a secondary machine, similar to tools like Remote Desktop Connection.

Sharing Capabilities

Users can invite people to share specific folders, facilitating collaboration or file transfers without relying on external drives or email attachments. However, all collaborators need a Windows Live account to participate.

Interface and Usability

The interface is clean and straightforward, displaying available devices and shared folders with clear status indicators. Setup and configuration require only a few steps, and the drag-and-drop approach for selecting folders to sync makes usage accessible to less technically inclined users.

Performance remains stable, even when handling larger files or multiple synchronization tasks. Transfers and updates occur automatically in the background, so users rarely need to intervene.

Limitations

While Windows Live Mesh is robust for Windows and Mac environments, it does not support mobile platforms like Android or iOS for direct sync or file management. Additionally, all participants must maintain a Microsoft (formerly Windows Live) account, which can be a hurdle if collaborating with external contacts.

Microsoft eventually integrated many of Mesh’s features into OneDrive, and as of 2013, official support for Mesh ceased. As a result, while Live Mesh delivered strong solutions in its time, newer alternatives now offer broader compatibility and improved integration.
